Teaching Blues
After having a relaxing time in South East Asia enjoying cheap and amazing food, I realize how much inaka life in Japan blows. I find my solace in watching Comedy Central and now ESPN. I haven’t taught a junior high class all year and I found out that I will be the listening portion of a test tomorrow. Most sane teachers dread having to be the human tape recorder but me? Wow, this is great, I haven’t planned a lesson since just before Christmas. I’ll go to class, read a dialog, come back to my desk in the teacher’s room and resume watching TV. The line between school and home life is also blurred. Sometimes I wonder why I even leave school. I’m just going to go home, plug in the computer, and resume my anti-diet of pringles and buffalo wing sauce. Is having 3 hot chocolates a day bad for me? Anyways, what’s my point? Maybe I should move to Osaka. I hear the people are semi-normal and they have an amazing underground music scene. The scene here in Fukuoka, you ask? For some reason, East-LA Dodger/Raider Homies are the newest thing.
I went out last weekend with some friends and we stumbled on a street that looked like a manga version of Echo Park. Girls were wearing Guadalupe jackets with Mexican flag bandanas. The guys had the grey Dickies shorts with the white tube socks pulled up, not showing any gay leg skin of course. The hats varied between Dodgers and Yankees with a few Athletic fans running into the conbini. A few cats had the plaid Easy-E thing going. Almost every kid had his head shaved and was wearing thick black sunglasses. The best dressed was definitely the guy in all purple who apparently rubbed chocolate all over his face to get the “brother” look. I can only guess that Stand and Deliver was just released on DVD here. No worries, I’ll take photos next time; it’s truly unreal.
Where the hell am I?

…seem to have a “Japan-phobia-syndrom”!?!
Hi there guy. I am the one who commented on your plan returning home by motorcycle (Horizons Unlimited). How long have you been over here in Japan? Guess you are one of the JET ALTs?? But, hey, I feel with you, know what you are talking about. I mean I am finishing my 14th (!!!) year over here at the same school(’s). If there is anything I can help you with, give me a “call”. Take care, take it light and don’t worry too much - life is short!!
